After a thorough recruitment process, NORCO selected two individuals that offer a blend of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm. James Starkey and Angus Wyatt come from different backgrounds but both provide excellent potential to be successful at NORCO.
Starkey is a recent graduate at Southampton Solent University. As a mature student he completed his degree in Yacht Design and Production at the school of Maritime Science and Engineering.
He brings to the team an insight into engineering science and contemporary design, along with the fundamental principles of naval architecture, construction methods, and specifically a keen interest in composite materials.
As part of his studies he produced a thesis on assessing the sustainability value of Volcanic Fibre in marine production composites, for instance comparing CO2 emissions for a yacht made with volcanic fibre and bio-resin, with a yacht made from traditional glass fibre composites.
Having lived on a yacht for over seven years at a young age and sailing around the world, Starkey’s understanding of sailing and love for marine environment is well ingrained.
Sustainability and the built environment have been a theme throughout James’s career, having previously worked in the construction industry, with leading architects and developers building Passive and Zero Carbon Houses.
Having completed three months’ work experience with NORCO, Starkey met with the team and gain a feel for the business and style of management, which he felt very comfortable with. Needless to say, when an opportunity rose to join NORCO on a permanent basis, he jumped at it.
“I am looking forward to working with customers to understand their needs and matching those with NORCO’s skills and capabilities,” he commented. “I have really enjoyed what I have learnt at university and for me, working at NORCO is a great opportunity to put into practice what I enjoy and combine that with what I have experienced in my previous working life.”
Wyatt has recently graduated from Plymouth University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering with Composites and this is his first job within the engineering sector. Due to specialising in the final year of his degree in composites, Wyatt was keen to find a company working in the same field. NORCO presented the perfect opportunity to work on a multitude of exciting composite projects.
Wyatt has joined the team as project engineer to be part of a large upcoming project. He is currently gaining experiences by helping with small parts of current projects.
“In my first few years at NORCO I hope to gain as much knowledge as possible from the experienced team around me to help further my engineering skills,” Wyatt stated. “Long-term I am looking to become a charted engineer with the IMechE, this is process that will take a fair few years to complete with a number of modules that need to be completed to reach the status.”
