NGCC introduces outstanding achievement award

The Network Group for Composites in Construction (NGCC) has announced it will be presenting Brian Bell, formally of Network Rail, with an ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ for his work with fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP). The award will be presented at the Advanced Composites in Construction (ACIC) 2013 conference, taking place on 10–12 September 2013 in Belfast, to celebrate Bell’s significant contributions to composites in the construction industry. Bell, who worked for Network Rail for 48 years before retiring this year, was integral in persuading Network Rail to use composites for strengthening existing bridges. He also helped to introduce full FRP footbridges into the company’s assets. Asked how he felt about receiving the award, Bell said: “I am staggered and humbled by the decision of NGCC to nominate me for this award. To be recognised by my peers in this way is the biggest professional honour that I could ever hope to achieve.” The award will be presented at the ACIC conference dinner on 11th September. Bell has been invited to the conference as a special guest for the full three-day event and will receive an honorary life membership to the NGCC. Claire Whysall, NGCC Coordinator, said: “The NGCC Steering Group felt that it is important to acknowledge individuals who play, or have played, a vital role in promoting FRPs in construction, not just within the company they work for but throughout the industry. For the Steering Group, Brian was the obvious recipient for the first ‘Outstanding Achievement’ award as, even though he is now in his retirement, he is still active in raising awareness of the materials and plays a vital role in the NGCC Bridge Design Group. It will be a pleasure to have him as guest of honour at the ACIC conference where he will receive his award.” The award will continue to be presented at each biennial ACIC conference. Registration for the ACIC conference is still open, with discounts available for NGCC members, students and one day delegates. www.acic-conference.com www.ngcc.org.uk
