Composites UK is starting the new decade with the highest number of member companies in its 30-year history. Over 380 companies from across the UK supply chain now form part of the Association’s network, showcasing the UK at the forefront of fibre-reinforced polymer innovation.

The first place where the UK will take centre stage is JEC World from 3–5 March in Paris. The Association is supporting the Department of International Trade with its 154m2 UK Pavilion (hall 6, stand S52). The stand will house around 20 companies, which will include Composites UK members. Invest Bristol and Bath and Business Wales will also be bringing companies, with the National Composites Centre taking part of the stand to promote its expertise. Midland’s Engine will be sponsoring the stand’s networking drinks reception on Wednesday 4th March from 2–4pm, which is open to everyone to attend and we hope to meet you there.

We also have an exciting events programme planned, which includes Tooling for Composites being held at BAE Systems in Samlesbury, and Aerospace Interiors Sector Showcase at Aerospace Bristol with our exhibition area alongside Concorde. A new event on the reuse and recycling of composites, Recomp will take place in May at the University of Warwick and we also have plans with the British Plastics Federation for the eighth annual Thermoplastic Composites. Our regional events will be relaunched as we see these as an important way to meet all of our members across the nation. Currently we have half day conferences in the planning stage for the East Midlands, North West and North East.

We will again be the Headline Industry Partner of the Composites Engineering Show, where our members receive 15% off exhibition space. We shall be working hard to put together a comprehensive show floor forum programme to promote the UK composites industry to the 15,000 visitors who visit the show.

With the upcoming publication of a new Composites Leadership Forum (CLF) roadmap for composites in construction, the Composites UK Construction Sector Group is developing its action plan for delivery against some of the outcomes. There's lots to do but this is an important sector where fibre-reinforced polymers can make a significant impact.

The CLF continues to grow in strength under the leadership of Ken Smart of McLaren, delivering against the UK national strategy for Composites. We remain secretariat for the group and involved across the working groups to ensure our members are informed of upcoming opportunities.

There's a lot of new activity across the rail sector with the formation of two groups UPCRII and BCRRE at the end of 2019. The group will work collaboratively to ensure the UK Composites sector can make the most of the opportunities this sector offers.

To complement this, we are working with Rory Pemberton on a secondment from NPL to look at standards required within the sector to ensure a level playing field – more on this to come.

Our current focus in sustainability is to support the ReDisCoveR initiative, led by the High Value Manufacturing Catapult. This builds on our Vision and Roadmap for Sustainable Composites to progress projects in recycling, disassembly, circular materials, and reuse.

We continue to give our members assistance in improving health and safety across the industry, working with HSE and other trade groups through the SIMPLC initiative, the strategic committee of which we chair; and of course, on the matter of Brexit for which we support both members and the wider industry.
