Composites UK has announced the launch of its document “FRP Bridges – Guidance for Designers” through CIRIA, funded by Highways England and Network Rail.

The guide shares the history of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) bridges in the UK together with some of the key learning points relating to FRP materials, the manufacturing process and relevant design criteria. Sustainability is also an area identified with recommendations made.

Composites UK produced the document as a result of industry demand, as at present there are minimal resources for the bridge engineer to refer to, with no recognised design standards to follow. However, structural Eurocodes are in development and there are a number of guides from materials manufacturers. The document aims to help bridge engineers understand FRP materials and how they can use them effectively in modern bridge construction.

The document was drafted and peer reviewed by industry experts within the Composites UK construction sector group, and edited by Prof Toby Mottram, University of Warwick and James Henderson, Atkins Ltd

The document is free to download from CIRIA’s website
