Multiple land speed record holder Andy Green has visited the manufacturing facility of leading composites and engineering specialists URT Group, to see construction of the Bloodhound SSC for the first time.

Green, who will attempt to set a new record of over 1,000mph in the car, aided URT’s specialist engineering team by adding layers of laminated carbon fibre to the monocoque section of the Bloodhound chassis, which will house the car’s cockpit and controls. He also explored the site’s manufacturing facilities and gave a half-hour presentation about Bloodhound to URT’s 100-strong workforce. “The sheer level of skill and precision exercised in creating the bespoke components for Bloodhound is extraordinary,” stated Green. “We’ve chosen URT because it’s the best specialist composites manufacturer in the world. Components made here are subject to huge stresses because of their applications on race tracks or in theatres of war. It’s been reassuring for me, today, to see the quality of the work I’ll be depending upon.” As a technical partner of the Bloodhound project, URT will spend more than 1,000 hours painstakingly building the carbon fibre monocoque structure of the car, which will be subject to huge g-forces when the car is accelerating, at a rate of 40mph per second, to speeds greater than that of a bullet fired from a Magnum 357 handgun. URT founding director, Matt Cox said: “Bloodhound SSC is a fantastic demonstration of British engineering ingenuity, ambition and excellence. Playing such a critical role in the project is very exciting for us.” Bloodhound will attempt this summer to break the current land speed record, set by Green in 1997 in Thrust SSC at 763mph. In 2014 Green and Bloodhound will go faster still, aiming to exceed speeds of 1,000mph. www.urtgroupltd.com www.bloodhoundssc.com
